Spotlight On: Ralph Lopez, Senior Vice President, Charlotte Hub, American Airlines

Ralph Lopez on Charlotte’s status as a ‘megahub’ December 2024 — In an interview with Invest:, Ralph Lopez, Senior Vice President of American Airlines’ Charlotte Hub, talked about the region’s importance as a “megahub,” ranking seventh worldwide for departures, and its critical role in the airline’s overall success, along with DFW accounting for 25% of American Airlines’ operations.

What have been some key achievements from the last 12-18 months for American Airlines and the Charlotte hub?

Over the last 18 months, American Airlines has seen significant growth in Charlotte across all areas. During summer 2024, the Charlotte hub expanded its flight schedule growing 13%  compared to last summer in terms of departures. This growth welcomed more customers through the hub, which is now among the busiest airports in the world, ranking seventh worldwide for departures and arrivals and ninth in North America by passenger volume. New destinations have also been added including Jackson Hole, Vancouver, and Calgary, alongside significant increases in flights to the Caribbean, Mexico, and Central America, making Charlotte a preferred departure hub. This growth has required immense effort and coordination, making it a gratifying accomplishment.

What distinguishes Charlotte from other hubs in the network?

Charlotte is more than just a hub, it’s a “megahub” and the third-largest single-airline hub in the world, so there are not many in its class. While Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) is the airline’s largest hub, Charlotte holds second place. When you consider the scale of the airline’s operations, it becomes clear how vital Charlotte is. Together, CLT and DFW account for 25% of the airline’s operations, so when Charlotte does well, the airline does well, and vice versa. A strong performance in Charlotte is essential to the overall success of the airline, especially given that the hub serves nearly 50 million customers annually. In addition to the volume of passengers, the hub supports about 700 peak daily departures, reinforcing its importance for travelers and making it an intrinsic part of the airline’s operations.

What impact does the Charlotte hub have on the economy?

The Charlotte hub is a major economic driver in the region, accounting for 5% of local GDP. It has been instrumental in workforce development, being the fourth largest employer in the area and providing employees with opportunities to build meaningful aviation careers. We have over 15,000 team members, with over 1,000 jobs added in the past year alone.  We’re actively hiring for more than 130 aviation maintenance technician (AMT) positions, which are high-paying and beneficial for the local economy. Additionally, there are indirect job opportunities, such as summer internships, that support career growth and local business development.

What are some of the primary trends you see in the aviation industry?

The airline industry is increasingly driven by technology, and American Airlines is at the forefront of these changes, using technology in new and unique ways. We’ve developed our Hub Efficiency Analytics Tool better known as HEAT that processes an incredible amount of data to avoid cancellations during severe weather events. Additionally, smart gating technology simplifies passenger transfers based on real-time connection needs. Given the complexity of information available at a hub of our size, these technologies have significantly improved efficiency and connectivity, with 76% of passengers connecting at CLT.

What initiatives are being put in place as they relate to sustainability?

Sustainability is a priority, and American Airlines is pioneering unique approaches to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The company has partnered with various organizations on sustainable fuel initiatives and collaborates with companies like Google, Infinium, and Breakthrough Energy to reduce atmospheric impacts. These efforts, while challenging, reflect meaningful progress in environmental responsibility.

What are your top priorities for the next few years?

American Airlines aims to maintain sustainable growth while enhancing the customer experience. The ongoing Terminal Lobby Expansion (TLE) project, which began five years ago, has improved flow at the departure level with additional space and upgraded security checkpoints. The addition of Concourse A Phase II will provide additional space for American Airlines in the first quarter as we transition into the vacated gates on the old Concourse A. The goal of this move is to support continued growth and help evenly disperse the flow of our operation across multiple concourses.  Future developments include adding new destinations, such as Athens (ATH), and onboarding additional team members to manage increased demand, particularly during the holiday season. Our mission is to care for people on life’s journey and to be an airline they can rely on.
