Consuelo Nelson, Dean, Galen College of Nursing
Consuelo Nelson, dean of the Galen College of Nursing, spoke with Invest: about the school’s academic offerings, community partnerships, and staying current in the evolving landscape of the nursing profession. She detailed the importance of compassionate care and how Galen plans to play a role in the growing healthcare sector in Miami.
What were the significant milestones and achievements for the college over the last 12 to 18 months?
We’ve strengthened our academic offerings through our enhanced community partnerships, playing an essential role in providing clinical training for our students. These partnerships provide practical, hands-on experience, which is vital to nursing education. Galen College of Nursing has elevated its nursing programs by expanding our clinical training opportunities and establishing our simulation center. Collaboration enhances the quality of education that we provide and strengthens the program’s reputation. Since stepping into this space in 2021, Galen has established a strong name and reputation, making it more attractive to prospective students.
How has the college adapted its infrastructure and student services to maintain quality education and personalized offerings amid the college’s growth?
We are purely a nursing school and dedicate ourselves to the profession. We have a robust set of resources that we provide to the students. Technology integration and simulation-based learning play an increasingly vital role in healthcare. It’s essential that nursing education adapts to that. We’ve incorporated more simulation-based learning through advanced simulation centers, including those offered by HCA and our own facilities. This hands-on experience is critical as technology continues to evolve in healthcare settings. Introducing the students to AI-based tools used in clinical settings will help them understand how AI can support their decision-making processes and assist with patient assessments. Staying ahead of these trends has assisted us in refining our curriculum and preparing our nursing students for the evolving healthcare landscape.
How have you refined your programs and partnerships to address the evolving healthcare demands, particularly for senior care?
The healthcare industry continues to face growing demand for skilled nurses, due to the aging population and the increased need for healthcare services. We are addressing this by expanding our nursing programs to accommodate more students. Galen, known as the “college of opportunity,” partners with HCA to provide the support, knowledge, and clinical experiences needed to prepare students for the workforce. Miami continues to attract investment and talent and needs a strong healthcare system to support that growth. Galen College of Nursing is aligned with that vision. The city’s healthcare infrastructure is robust enough to meet the demands of the growing and diverse population, and we play a part in meeting the system’s growing needs.
What progress has been made to create new initiatives or enhance existing ones, to ensure access, equity, and support for all students?
Galen College is committed to providing top-tier nursing education to equip students with the skills and experience to meet the trends and evolving needs of the local healthcare system. Our graduates have a diversity rate of 87.1%. We’re not only preparing students for the increasing diversity and dynamics of the healthcare environment, but we also live in it. Our strategic partnership with HCA is a prime example of how we work to enhance the local economy. This partnership fosters relationships with major healthcare providers and helps us develop a talent pipeline that supports Miami’s healthcare infrastructure and economic growth. Our campus is involved with the Nursing Consortium of Florida, which provides opportunities for global collaboration. Galen is a key player in shaping the future of nursing education in Florida, attracting international talent and investment.
Beyond technical skills, what are some of the top qualities and soft skills nursing graduates need to succeed in the healthcare industry?
Compassion is one of the most important elements. There’s competency, compassion, and the art of caring. During the pandemic, opportunities to provide compassionate care were minimal, but Galen aims to restore this focus. We use a compassionate care model that is followed by both our faculty and institution, and we integrate it into our curriculum. By incorporating this model across our curriculum, we ensure that we’re not providing a large number of nurses, but a highly skilled and compassionate workforce.
What are Galen College’s top priorities for growth over the next few years?
Meeting the needs of the community is a primary focus. We want our students to be equipped with cultural competence and the skills needed to provide high-quality care to underserved populations. We want nurses who understand that this profession is a commitment to continuing education. Advancing the mission and the vision of our nursing programs will benefit from having a strong network of nursing professionals, educators, nursing leaders, and healthcare providers across Florida. We will ensure we have the ability to deliver an education of high standards and high quality and provide access to a wide array of resources, best practices, and collaborative opportunities.
Miami is a popular area that continues to grow, and I can’t emphasize enough the demand for skilled nurses. Our nursing program is expanding to meet this demand, and we will continue to enhance our clinical training partnerships and curriculum while leveraging technology to provide a cutting-edge learning experience. All these things will be necessary for the future of healthcare challenges. Miami is becoming a hub for healthcare innovation, especially in the fields of AI, telehealth, and remote patient monitoring. Incorporating these technologies into the curriculum will ensure we are prepared for the future of healthcare. It’s also important to address the importance of mental health and holistic care, which are critical needs as Miami’s diverse population continues to grow.
