Jaime Stuyck, General Manager, Mr. C Hotel
In an interview with Invest:, Jaime Stuyck, general manager of Mr. C Hotel, highlighted the hotel’s achievements in labor retention, its sustainability initiatives, and its close ties with Coconut Grove. He also discussed challenges in staff retention, evolving guest expectations, and maintaining authentic service.
Reflecting on the past year, what have been the most significant milestones or achievements for Mr. C Coconut Grove?
We’ve seen stability in the labor market. We’ve improved our labor retention year over year, cutting turnover by 9% year-to-date. That’s been a big achievement on the labor side. We’ve also seen some stability in the market regarding our business. Our summers now resemble Miami summers from previous, pre-COVID years. Our peaks and valleys are similar to how they used to be, which makes it easier to forecast. There’s a strong focus on sustainability now and an expectation to create a luxury experience without losing sight of sustainable practices. We’ve started composting, recycling glass, and eliminating single-use plastics in the hotel. These initiatives are part of our effort to meet current demands, while also staying ahead of what our guests will want in the future. We’re keen on offering sustainable options without compromising the level of service, so we’re laser-focused on that.
How does Mr. C integrate the essence of the artistic Coconut Grove neighborhood into the guest experience?
We’re very involved with the neighborhood and contribute both our time and resources to support local artists. For example, we’re involved in the upcoming Coconut Grove Art Festival in February, the Montreux Jazz Festival Miami in March, and the Coconut Grove Art Festival in February. We also participate in cleanup initiatives along Bayshore to support the businesses there, including our own. We’re strong proponents of the arts, contributing to events like Pinta Miami, the Cuban Ballet, and the Miami Opera. We assist with resources and sometimes volunteer our time to help promote these cultural events.
What trends are you seeing in the region’s hotel industry, and how is Mr. C positioning itself to stay ahead of the competition?
A lot of Miami as a market is focused on sustainability. Right now, the catchphrase is all about sustainability. The city is eager to showcase what our industry, particularly the hotel sector, is doing. For example, we’ve recently partnered with an organization called Hotels for Trees. This initiative helps us plant trees in the Everglades. For every guest who opts out of housekeeping services, we report it to this organization, and they plant a tree in the Everglades. This supports an ecosystem that’s facing challenges right now. Every little bit helps, and it all adds up.
With Miami’s continued growth as a luxury destination, what opportunities and challenges do you foresee?
One of the main challenges will be retaining quality staff. As Miami grows, and industries like tech, finance, and banking expand, the city becomes more expensive. This makes it harder to retain service-focused employees as many of them start exploring other industries. To address this, we’re ensuring our salaries are competitive, but we also invest in our employees through both internal and external training. We remain focused on creating an engaging environment within the hotel for our team members, by celebrating exceptional service, recognizing birthdays and anniversaries, and doing fun things like buying ice cream on a hot day. These little gestures help keep our employees grounded, happy, and focused on providing excellent service, which in turn strengthens our culture at Mr. C. Keeping staff happy and engaged is key to overcoming that.
What is your strategy to maintain high occupancy rates and guest loyalty in such a dynamic environment?
We differentiate ourselves through authentic service. We don’t script interactions or how we answer the phone or do check-ins. Of course, we hit key points in regards to our steps of service, but everything comes from the heart. This authenticity is felt by our guests and helps distinguish us in the market. In addition to that, we focus on quality, whether it’s the ingredients in our dishes or the linens on our beds. Combine that with the hotel’s incredible design, and those three elements — authenticity, quality, and design — are what set us apart.
What role do you see Mr. C playing in shaping Miami’s hospitality and tourism landscape in the next decade?
We’re a small hotel in a very large city, so I wouldn’t want to overstate our influence on a place as great as Miami. In addition to our focus on service, luxury, and sustainability. Traffic and parking are major issues in Miami, especially here in Coconut Grove where parking is limited. If we can help solve these small challenges within our community, we’ll be doing our part to ensure the future of hospitality in this area. Internally, we are tackling this challenge with our employees by encouraging them to cycle in or use scooters to get to work instead of driving. We have added parking slots for these onsite. We want to continue to encourage that Coconut Grove is one of the very few areas in South Florida wherein you can park your car and just walk around to explore the neighborhood.
