Spotlight On: Timothy Lott, Senior Regional Manager, Texas Mutual

May 2025 — In an interview with Invest:, Timothy Lott, senior regional manager at Texas Mutual, highlighted Houston’s strategic importance and the company’s commitment to “mutual care.” Key priorities include expanding workforce development and enhancing customer service responsiveness.

What is Texas Mutual’s mission, and how does it apply to your work in Houston?

Texas Mutual is the leading workers’ compensation insurance company in Texas. We have the largest market share in the state, and our mission centers on mutual care: establishing a supportive relationship between injured workers, policyholders, employers, and medical providers. We aim to be a centipede for a healthier workplace. That means helping injured employees recover and return to their pre-injury condition, guiding them through the process with compassion and clarity.

Why is Houston a strategic market for Texas Mutual?

Our company is headquartered in Austin, but Houston is critical because it’s the largest city and the second-largest metro area in Texas. It’s one of the largest business markets in the United States, with more Fortune 500 companies than any other city except New York and Chicago. Houston has about 7.5 million residents, and its economic influence in the state is substantial. We must have a strong presence here to support our clients and meet the demands of such a major economic hub.

How has your A.M. Best A+ rating influenced your strategy and client engagement?

It pushes us to uphold the highest standards in service and integrity. We take pride in our customer care, ensuring live representatives are available to answer calls, providing fast follow-up, and helping clients navigate claims processes. We want to be the insurance company that challenges the negative perceptions of the industry. Our mission is to highlight what we can do to support our injured workers and employers, not just what we can’t. We believe in mutual care, transformational management, and treating all stakeholders with dignity.

What accomplishments are you most proud of from the past year in Houston?

One of our biggest wins was achieving our highest score ever in employee satisfaction. That survey revealed that our staff feels Texas Mutual is a place where they could stay for their entire careers, not just because of pay, but because of our environment and culture. We also retained our leadership in revenue and market share in Texas for workers’ compensation. Additionally, we hired a chief transformation officer who is helping us prepare for the future workplace and ensure we’re aligning with the evolving expectations of the next generation of workers.

How do you collaborate with employees to promote workplace safety?

We emphasize empathy and understanding across all levels of our organization. We host sessions on topics like unconscious bias, non-judgmental communication, and the emotional impact of injury. When incidents like mass shootings make headlines, they force all of us to reevaluate our approach to safety, not just physically but emotionally. Our corporate office holds regular meetings to reinforce these principles and bring that education directly to Houston. It’s about creating a safe, supportive environment for both employees and the customers we serve.

What new workforce development initiatives are underway in Houston?

We’re deeply engaged in expanding our philanthropy and grant programs in Houston as Texas Mutual donated $7.5 million to the greater Houston Area in workforce development to support working Texans and their families, and in disaster resiliency since 2022.  We’re working with our internal grant division and our regional vice president to make sure Houston receives the attention it deserves. Historically, Houston hasn’t been top-of-mind for some statewide initiatives, but that’s changing. We’re working to create more visibility and funding for local programs that promote safety and youth engagement, including volunteer and grant-based efforts.

Which services are in highest demand locally, and how are you adapting?

Since the pandemic, there’s been a rise in anxiety and urgency. People want answers faster than ever. That’s why we’ve strengthened our customer service, ensuring live representatives are available and that most issues are resolved within 24 hours. We’re also exploring new communication tools like text and email to keep up with the expectations of today’s clients. Our goal is to make sure people feel seen, heard, and supported when they contact us, no matter how serious or minor their issue might be.

What technological innovations are helping you improve customer experience?

We’re working on a number of internal system enhancements designed to make our operations more agile and aligned with emerging technologies, including AI. While I can’t share specific details yet, our IT department is deeply involved in developing these tools to benefit both our employees and our clients. The goal is to make things faster, more efficient, and more responsive to the digital age.

What are your top priorities for Texas Mutual in Houston, and what is your long-term vision?

Our top priority is recruiting and retaining the best talent — people who can serve our clients with professionalism and empathy. We’re focused on providing a healthy work-life balance, supporting employees through transformational change, and ensuring they feel a part of the company’s evolving direction. A big part of that is our apprentice program, which offers job training and covers college tuition. We’re developing that further with partners like Houston Community College to provide opportunities for those who might not have gone to college otherwise.

Ultimately, our long-term vision is to be the workers’ compensation provider of the future. That means embracing change, investing in innovation, and staying ahead of industry trends, especially in claims management and customer relations. We’re building a foundation now to ensure we’re a trusted, responsive, and compassionate provider for the next 100 years. Texas Mutual is here to serve, and here to stay.
