5 ways to celebrate the Halloween season in San Antonio
Writer: Mariana Hernández

October 2024 — As the fall season approaches, San Antonio’s calendar is filling with events that highlight the city’s cultural vibrancy. From community festivals to seasonal celebrations, the Alamo City offers a range of activities that capture the essence of autumn. With cooler weather and the city’s signature traditions, it’s the perfect time to explore San Antonio’s unique blend of heritage and festivity. Whether you’re enjoying the sights or participating in the celebrations, this season is not to be missed.
Ofrendas and Altars
As one of the U.S. cities with the largest Latino population, San Antonio’s celebrations around Hispanic culture are deeply meaningful. National Hispanic Heritage Month just ended on Oct. 15, but if you missed it, the fiesta continues with the Día de los Muertos. San Antonio invites you to celebrate the largest Day of the Dead in the U.S. As paradoxical as it may seem, the Day of the Dead is one of the most joyful and charming celebrations shared by Hispanic culture. Across the city, you’ll find stunning ofrendas (altars). La Villita neighborhood is known for the vibrant, design-focused altars, often adorned with alebrijes, mythical creatures said to protect the souls of departed loved ones, according to hispanic traditions. At the Pearl, you can enjoy traditional cuisine and browse local artists’ crafts. The Briscoe Western Art Museum will host a community ofrenda, where visitors are encouraged to contribute with photos and offerings to the shared altar.

Day of the Dead River Parade
What could be more captivating than a colorful altar? How about a floating procession of altars! The Day of the Dead River Parade features barges, each showcasing unique Día de los Muertos traditions, accompanied by vibrant lights and live music. It’s a family-friendly event that transforms the San Antonio River Walk into a spectacle of color and culture. Do not be afraid of the dancing skeletons; the catrinas and catrines represent the cycle of life and serve as a reminder to embrace joy. Marigolds, known as the “flowers of the dead,” are believed to guide souls back to the living world. These traditions and more will be beautifully displayed during the parade on Oct. 25.
