Derek Flint, Market General Manager, The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne
Invest: sat down with Derek Flint, market general manager of The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne, to discuss the resort’s comprehensive transformation, its approach to immersive luxury, and why its location offers guests both privacy and immediate access to Miami. “We wanted guests to feel the energy of Miami, but still feel removed from it,” Flint said.
How do you position The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne within the broader Ritz-Carlton luxury brand while also giving it a distinct local identity?
The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne, Miami is a luxury oceanfront resort with a locally inspired identity within the broader Ritz-Carlton luxury brand framework. It features a completely redesigned spa with a new spa garden, updated guest rooms and suites, state-of-the-art fitness facilities, elevated poolside and leisure experiences, The Club Lounge, the Cliff Drysdale Tennis Center, and curated retail offerings, including 120 Lino, Lilly Pulitzer, Sabbia, Coastal Boutique, and The Spa Boutique. Families are welcomed with a new Ritz Kids Club, offering interactive and thoughtfully designed spaces for exploration and play. A premier dining and cocktail destination, the resort offers six distinct concepts, including Luma, Paralía, Rum Bar, Dune Beach Bar, Scoop, and Stefano’s, highlighting Florida-sourced ingredients and culturally inspired cuisine. Blending contemporary design with Key Biscayne’s natural beauty and heritage, the resort offers a refined retreat where guests can relax and recharge, enjoying an elevated escape marked by thoughtful design and attentive service. This has been the first comprehensive transformation of the resort in 25 years, and the biggest transformation the hotel has ever gone through.
We were not simply trying to refresh finishes. We were thinking about how guests want to experience a coastal resort today. We wanted them to feel the energy of Miami, but still feel removed from it. You are minutes from the city, but once you cross the causeway into Key Biscayne, you are emotionally transported somewhere that feels more Caribbean, without needing a passport to get there.
We also wanted to connect the property more directly to the ocean and the island lifestyle. The ocean is no longer just a view. It is part of the experience from the moment guests arrive. As soon as you step into the hotel, you can see the water through floor-to-ceiling windows, and that connection continues throughout the public spaces and guest rooms. The tones, materials, and design all reflect the sea, sand, and sunlight. It truly looks nothing like it did before the renovation.
How are you creating more personalized and memorable guest experiences across the property?
Personalization is at the core of what we do. Our amenities are designed to create a sense of place, whether that is a chocolate amenity that reflects the resort itself, bespoke cabana setups, or tailored packages that feel immersive and memorable. The goal is to help guests reconnect, rejuvenate, and feel transported from the moment they arrive.
We also offer a number of signature experiences. One is our Ritz Kids Turtles and Tides program, which is especially meaningful because sea turtles nest on the beaches in front of the resort. The program gives younger guests an immersive way to learn about turtle season, the dunes, and the surrounding environment. It ties the resort experience directly to Key Biscayne’s natural setting.
Another example is Lunar Glow, one of our spa experiences. Guests begin with a cleansing ritual, followed by a CBD massage, and then enjoy a private candlelight dinner in the spa garden. The spa becomes a personal sanctuary for the evening.
We also offer Beyond the Horizon, which takes families to Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park for a guided tour centered on the area’s lighthouse and history, followed by a beachside picnic back at the resort. These are the kinds of experiences that make a stay memorable and distinctive.
How are local culture and regional influences shaping your dining concepts?
We reconcepted two of our restaurants from the ground up. Luma, our Italian restaurant, and Paralía, which replaced our former Mexican concept, are part of a broader set of six distinct food and beverage offerings across the property. While each concept is different, they all highlight Florida-sourced ingredients, whether that is seafood from local waters or other products found across the state.
At Luma, our executive chef focuses on handmade pastas, refined classics, and fish, seafood, and prime cuts prepared with a Josper oven. There is also a strong beverage program built around aperitivo hour, with spritzes, highballs, and Negronis crafted for that evening ritual. The experience continues through tableside finishes such as the gelato cart and granita cart.
At Paralía, our new chef brings deep knowledge of Greek and Turkish cuisine, and the restaurant offers a meze-style experience built around shared plates, dips, and small bites. One standout dish is the short rib baklava, which takes a classic dessert format and turns it into a savory appetizer. It is a creative and memorable expression of the concept.
Then there is Dune Beach Bar, which, along with Paralía, has a direct oceanfront setting that is incredibly rare in Miami. Guests are right on the beach. Dune Beach Bar is also home to an iconic bartender, Geno Marron, who has been part of Key Biscayne for decades and gives the venue its own personality and sense of place.
How have architecture and design changes helped elevate the guest experience?
This transformation is unlike anything the property has seen in its history, and the design teams deserve a great deal of credit. The work reflects the natural beauty, heritage, and relaxed spirit of Key Biscayne, while balancing that with elegance and contemporary sophistication.
A major focus was seamless indoor-outdoor living. We created open-air architecture and reimagined spaces that had not really been activated in the past. Our courtyard is a good example. It used to be a place people simply passed through on their way to the pools or the beach. Now, it has become a destination in itself, with seating areas where guests gather, read, enjoy a glass of wine, and stay for hours.
The visual connection to the ocean was also critical. In the past, various design elements blocked those sightlines. Now, from the moment guests arrive, the ocean is the hero of the experience. That first impression matters, and it immediately sets the property apart.
How do you balance exclusivity and privacy with easy access to Miami’s broader cultural and entertainment scene?
We are in a fortunate position. The resort offers a real duality. It is secluded, on an island, away from downtown, so it feels like a beachfront sanctuary. However, it is also only 10 to 12 minutes from downtown Miami.
That means guests can spend an entire week at the resort without ever needing to leave. With six food and beverage concepts, the beach, the spa, and a range of experiences on property, everything is here. But if they want the dining, nightlife, and energy of Miami, it is only a short drive away.
That combination is one of our greatest strengths. We offer a retreat that feels removed from the city, while still giving guests immediate access to it.
How do wellness offerings support the property’s overall luxury positioning?
Wellness is a major part of who we are, and it is anchored by the spa. We offer holistic and immersive treatments that range from sound therapy and guided meditation to signature massages and red light therapy. Those offerings are designed to support both physical restoration and emotional well-being.
We have also partnered with Tremble, a well-known Pilates studio in Miami, to bring classes into our fitness center. In addition, we offer daily yoga on the oceanfront lawn, which gives guests a wellness experience connected to the property’s natural setting.
Even in the rooms, wellness is present. Guests have access to in-room wellness kits with yoga mats, resistance bands, and weights, so they can continue their routines privately if they choose. Experiences such as Lunar Glow extend that philosophy further by combining spa rituals, private dining, and a sense of complete escape.
Luxury today is not just about finishes or service. It is also about how a guest feels during their stay, and wellness is central to that.
What are you seeing in terms of market momentum and demand as the resort reopens after its transformation?
We reopened to strong demand. Whether part of that is pent-up demand because we were closed for seven months or simply the strength of the Miami market, the response has been tremendous. Group meetings and special events are a huge part of who we are. With 490 rooms, 26 meeting rooms, and more than 37,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor meeting space, that segment is important to the property.
Since reopening, that business has come back in a major way, and it does not look like it is slowing down. The outlook for 2027 is strong, and what we are already seeing for 2028 is encouraging as well.
Miami is absolutely back, and the timing of this transformation could not be better. With major events such as Formula 1 and the FIFA World Cup helping elevate the market even further, we are well positioned to benefit from the city’s continued global momentum.
