Rodney Nabors, Regional CEO, First Financial Bank
Invest: spoke with Rodney Nabors, regional CEO of First Financial Bank, about the bank’s expansion across Texas, its community banking philosophy, and opportunities in the Houston market.”Texas has now eclipsed California in the number of Fortune 500 headquarters, and that says a great deal about what is happening here,” Nabors said.
How has your transition to First Financial Bank shaped your perspective on the organization?
At First Financial, every customer still experiences the personal attention and local decision-making that define community banking. Our bankers live and work in the communities they serve, understand local businesses and families, and have the ability to respond to their customers’ needs quickly and effectively.
Many banks lose some of that local connection as they grow. What attracted me to First Financial is that we have intentionally preserved it. Our culture is guided by a clear mission, a commitment to building lifelong relationships, and 21 service non-negotiables that reinforce how we serve customers, support our employees, and invest in our communities.
As we continue to expand across Texas, including in dynamic markets like Houston, our goal is simple: combine the strength, resources, and capabilities of a larger bank with the responsiveness and personal service of a true community bank.
How has joining a larger organization expanded your ability to support Houston businesses?
One of the greatest advantages of First Financial Bank is our ability to meet clients wherever they are in their financial journey. Whether it is a family purchasing a vehicle, an entrepreneur launching a new business or a growing company pursuing a $30 million expansion project, we have the expertise and resources to help them succeed.
What makes that especially meaningful in a market like Houston is the diversity of the economy. We serve businesses across a wide range of industries and can provide solutions that grow alongside them, from operating accounts and treasury services to equipment financing, commercial real estate lending, wealth management and mortgage services.
As First Financial has grown, our capabilities have expanded significantly, but our approach remains relationship-driven. Clients do not have to outgrow their bank as their needs become more sophisticated. We can support them through every stage of growth while continuing to provide the local decision-making and personal service they expect from a community bank.
That combination of scale, expertise and personalized service positions us well to help Houston businesses capitalize on opportunities across the region.
Where do you see the biggest drivers of growth in Houston today?
Houston will always be recognized as a global energy leader, but what excites me most is the growing diversity of the region’s economy. Today, Houston is attracting investment and talent across industries such as healthcare, technology, manufacturing, logistics, professional services, and energy. That diversification creates resilience and long-term economic opportunity.
Texas has now surpassed California in the number of Fortune 500 headquarters, and Houston continues to benefit from that momentum. Companies are drawn here because of our business-friendly environment, access to a highly skilled workforce, world-class infrastructure and the entrepreneurial spirit that has long defined this market.
What makes Houston particularly unique is that growth is occurring at every level. We are seeing startups launch, middle-market companies expand and large corporations relocate or increase their investment in the region. That creates opportunities not only for businesses but also for the communities and families that support them.
From First Financial Bank’s perspective, that broad-based growth aligns with our relationship-driven approach. Whether we are helping a family purchase a home, supporting an entrepreneur’s first venture or financing a company’s next phase of expansion, Houston’s diverse economy provides tremendous opportunities for our clients and the region as a whole.
How are trends such as AI affecting the businesses you work with?
AI is creating opportunities for businesses to improve efficiency, gain insights more quickly and enhance customer service. While it is still early to predict its full impact, most organizations are focused on using AI to help their employees work smarter and deliver better outcomes rather than simply reducing headcount.
At First Financial Bank, we view AI as a tool that supports our people and strengthens the service we provide. We are investing in technology that helps us respond more quickly, operate more efficiently and better meet our customers’ needs.
What will not change is who we are. As a community bank, our greatest value comes from understanding our customers, their goals and the communities we serve. AI can help us be more effective, but it will never replace the personal relationships, local decision-making and trusted advice that define our approach to banking.
How is First Financial Bank using technology to improve the customer experience?
We are continually evaluating how technology can make banking simpler, faster and more convenient for our customers. Whether it is improving the responsiveness of our customer care center, streamlining digital banking services, or reducing the time it takes to resolve an issue such as a debit card concern, our focus is on removing friction from the banking experience.
Our goal is to make banking effortless. Customers do not want to spend time navigating problems or waiting for answers. They want solutions that are fast, easy, and reliable. We measure the value of technology by how effectively it improves the customer experience and allows us to serve people more efficiently.
Technology, however, does not replace the personal relationships that define community banking. It enables our team to spend less time on routine processes and more time helping customers achieve their financial goals. When customers walk away feeling valued, understood, and well-served, that is when technology has done its job.
How have client expectations changed when it comes to their banking partner?
Today, clients expect more than a transaction. They expect a trusted adviser. They want a banking partner who understands their business, helps them navigate challenges, identifies opportunities, and brings ideas to the table that support their long-term success.
That consultative approach is what differentiates First Financial Bank. Our bankers take the time to understand each client’s goals and serve as a resource beyond traditional banking needs. Whether it is answering questions, providing industry insights, or connecting clients with the right people and solutions, we work as an extension of their team.
One of our greatest strengths is the ability to combine local decision-making with the resources of a larger organization. With 80 locations across Texas, our bankers collaborate across markets and industries, sharing knowledge and expertise that can benefit clients throughout the state. That allows us to deliver the personal service of a community bank while offering the breadth of experience and resources that growing businesses need.
How are you attracting, retaining, and developing banking talent?
We attract talented bankers because of the reputation First Financial Bank has built across Texas and the culture we have created. My own experience reflects that. I joined First Financial because I saw an organization that was committed to its clients, its communities, and its people.
Retention starts with empowerment. Our bankers are not simply asked to process transactions or take orders. They are trusted advisers who are encouraged to build relationships, solve problems, and make a meaningful impact for their clients and communities. That sense of purpose is both rewarding and professionally fulfilling.
Development is equally important. With operations across eight regions and 80 locations, our bankers have access to a broad network of experienced colleagues, market expertise, and opportunities for growth. We encourage collaboration, knowledge sharing and continuous learning so our team members can expand their skills and advance their careers.
Combined with our strong balance sheet, community banking culture and long-term commitment to Texas, First Financial Bank offers an environment where talented professionals can grow, make a difference and build lasting careers.
How does First Financial Bank give back to the communities it serves?
Supporting our communities is part of who we are as a community bank. We partner with chambers of commerce, nonprofit organizations, schools, and community groups across our footprint because strong communities create opportunities for businesses, families, and local economies to thrive.
When we see a need, we look for ways to help. Sometimes that means providing financial support, but more often it means our bankers volunteering their time, sharing their expertise, and actively serving the communities where they live and work. We believe meaningful community involvement requires more than writing a check. It requires building relationships and investing in the long-term success of the people we serve.
One example is our annual Day of Service. Last year marked the 10th anniversary of this initiative, with more than 1,000 employees participating in community projects across Texas. We were also proud to partner with the Texas Bankers Association to encourage banks throughout the state to join in service projects, expanding the impact beyond our organization. We hope that this spirit of service continues to grow and becomes a hallmark of the banking industry as a whole.
Looking ahead, what gives you the most confidence about Houston’s economy, and what are your priorities for First Financial Bank?
What gives me the most confidence about Greater Houston is the diversity and resilience of its economy. Houston has long been known for energy, but it is also a leader in healthcare, manufacturing, technology, logistics, and many other industries. Combined with continued population growth and a strong entrepreneurial spirit, those factors create tremendous opportunities for businesses and communities throughout the region.
For First Financial Bank in Houston, our footprint stretches from Huntsville to Palacios, and we see significant opportunity to continue growing alongside the communities we serve. Our priority is not simply to expand our presence but to do so thoughtfully by attracting talented bankers, deepening relationships, and delivering exceptional service to our clients.
We believe growth starts with people. Success is not measured by the number of branches we operate but by the quality of the bankers we bring into our organization and the impact they make in their communities. Houston’s future remains bright, and we are committed to being a trusted financial partner for businesses, families, and entrepreneurs as the region continues to grow and prosper.
Is there anything else you would like readers to know?
Customers today have more choices than ever when it comes to banking. What I encourage people to consider is whether they have a banking partner who is responsive, accessible, and genuinely invested in their success.
If someone wants to understand what makes First Financial Bank different, I would encourage them to read our 21 non-negotiables. They are more than words on a page. They represent the values and behaviors that guide how we serve our customers, support our communities, and work together as a team. Many organizations talk about culture; we strive to live ours every day.
That culture creates an environment where employees are empowered to solve problems and do what is right for the customer. When someone walks into one of our banks, they are not going to hear, “That’s not my department.” They are going to find people who take ownership, work together, and focus on finding solutions. That commitment to service, accountability, and relationships is what defines First Financial Bank.
