June 2024 — Minneapolis has achieved an impressive milestone by securing the 18th spot in the Happy City Index 2024 Ranking, a testament to its dedication to enhancing the well-being of its residents. The Happy City Index evaluates cities globally based on various factors that contribute to overall happiness, including community engagement, governance, economy, environment, and mobility.
“We have found that as a city, it is important for us to show people what they can experience,” said Melvin Tennant, president & CEO of Meet Minneapolis, in an interview with Invest:.
Minneapolis excelled particularly in the categories of citizen engagement and economic vitality. The city’s score of 1,647.7 points reflects its robust community initiatives and strong economic infrastructure. The city government’s commitment to inclusive policies, sustainable urban planning, and accessible public services has played a significant role in this achievement.
The city’s high ranking underscores its vibrant community life and proactive governance. Minneapolis boasts numerous green spaces, cultural amenities, and community events that foster social cohesion and a sense of belonging among residents. The local government’s efforts in promoting sustainable practices and ensuring economic opportunities for all citizens have further contributed to the city’s high happiness quotient.
“We are the largest city in this region, and we have arts and culture, sports, and restaurants, so we are trying to leverage being that hub of activity in this region for visitors in our drive market,” continued Tennant.
Environmental stewardship is another area where Minneapolis shines. Its Climate Legacy Initiative strives to support the city’s ambitious climate objectives over the next decade. The city has made significant strides in reducing its carbon footprint, enhancing public transportation, and expanding green spaces. These initiatives improve the quality of life and attract new residents and businesses, creating a positive feedback loop of growth and happiness.
“Minneapolis has a great business climate, which continues to evolve. The downtown area where I work is gaining more energy. We’ve seen an increase in activity over the last nine months. Businesses are adapting to a hybrid model, balancing remote work with in-person collaboration. This equilibrium allows for both flexibility and focused teamwork,” Jamie Woell, office managing partner of RSM, told Invest:.
In terms of mobility, Minneapolis has developed a comprehensive transportation network that includes extensive bike lanes, efficient public transit, and pedestrian-friendly streets. This reduces traffic congestion and pollution and encourages a healthy and active lifestyle among its residents.
The recognition by the Happy City Index highlights Minneapolis as a model for other cities striving to enhance the happiness and well-being of their populations. The city’s focus on holistic development, addressing its residents’ physical and emotional needs, sets it apart in the global rankings. Minneapolis was the No.1 city listed for the United States and the only one in the U.S. that made the top 37 Golden list.
Minneapolis’ achievement reflects the collaborative efforts of its local government, businesses, and citizens. The city’s forward-thinking policies and initiatives in education, health, and social services ensure that all residents have the necessary resources to lead fulfilling lives.
“We are in the midst of our master plan, which involves bringing together our stakeholders within our tourism ecosystem to gain consensus on major initiatives and programs we need to undertake to stay competitive over the next 30 years,” said Tennant.
