Carla Lovett, Executive Director, SouthTech Schools
In an interview with Invest:, Carla Lovett, executive director of SouthTech Schools, discussed the school’s recent milestones, including its “A” ratings and expanded industry certifications, efforts to balance technology with hands-on learning, and strategies to address enrollment challenges and population shifts.
What have been the main highlights or key milestones for SouthTech Academy in the last year?
One of our most exciting accomplishments was receiving “A” ratings for both our middle and high schools. This achievement is especially meaningful since many schools in our area do not perform at this level, reflecting the dedication of our staff and students.
We’ve also seen a significant increase in industry certifications. As a career and technical education (CTE) school system, every student is enrolled in a career academy. Last year, our high-school students earned over 860 adult-level certifications, and our middle schoolers earned more than 150 — a major growth, especially at the middle school level.
Another highlight was celebrating our 20th anniversary as a charter school. Last March, we hosted SouthTech Spectacular, a community carnival and festival that drew great participation from students, parents, staff, and the community.
Looking ahead, we’re launching a new Agricultural Technology career academy in the fall. Agriculture is a major industry in Palm Beach County, and this program will prepare students for careers in both rural and urban agriculture, including aquaponics and microfarming.
How does SouthTech Academy prepare students for college and the workforce?
We prioritize staying current with academic and industry standards. For example, when the state introduced a new standardized test, we ensured our teachers were well-prepared to train students.
In CTE, we take a strategic approach. First, we align our programs with state-approved career academies and certifications. More importantly, we stay in tune with the needs of our local community and workforce. For example, the pandemic shifted many industries, and we’ve worked hard to adjust our offerings to reflect these changes.
Partnerships with local businesses are another priority, providing feedback on workforce needs and creating opportunities for internships or employment. For instance, our Automotive Technology program collaborates with Ed Morse Automotive and Palm Beach County Maintenance, benefiting both students and employers.
Although 80% of our graduates pursue college or postsecondary training, the other 20% enter the workforce directly. We’re proud that all of our students leave SouthTech with options — whether that’s further education, a career, or both. Our programs equip students with certifications and skills that prepare them for high-paying, stable jobs while keeping doors open for lifelong learning and growth.
How does SouthTech Academy promote leadership and excellence among its students?
Our success starts with the strong culture we’ve built, emphasizing support and high expectations. When students feel cared for and encouraged, they are more likely to rise to challenges and achieve their potential.
Equally important are our quality instructors, who guide students to succeed, whether they’re excelling or need extra support. This combination of culture, expectations, and exceptional teaching empowers students to perform at their best academically and in their career fields.
What support services does SouthTech Academy offer to students who need extra help academically?
We provide various support services tailored to individual needs. During the school day, we offer courses like intensive reading to address specific gaps. Additionally, we provide after-school tutoring and host Saturday school sessions, especially during testing season, to prepare students for state exams, the SAT, or the ACT.
We also run academic boot camps, where students focus intensively on specific subjects during the school day. These camps are particularly effective before major tests.
In partnership with a local nonprofit, we offer a summer camp combining academic reinforcement with fun enrichment activities. This camp has been highly effective in preventing the summer slide, with data showing attendees often make gains, thanks to a balance of academics and engaging activities like field trips.
How does SouthTech Academy incorporate technology into education while maintaining a balance?
Technology is integral to education today, and we strive to equip students with the skills to use it responsibly. However, we emphasize balance. While every classroom has one-to-one Chromebook access, students aren’t on computers all day. Instead, we integrate technology alongside traditional resources like textbooks and novels.
As a CTE school, we also emphasize hands-on learning. For example, culinary arts students work directly in the kitchen with tools and techniques that go beyond digital platforms.
We’ve also focused on AI, ensuring educators understand its capabilities and limitations. Over the past two years, we’ve trained staff on appropriate AI integration, developed policies, and taught students when and how to use it ethically. Managing AI is a balancing act, as it can enhance teaching while presenting new challenges.
What are some of the major challenges SouthTech Academy is facing?
One significant challenge involves population shifts driven by remote work trends, fluctuating housing costs, and the pandemic’s economic effects. Families are moving in and out of areas based on affordability and flexibility, affecting enrollments.
We’re noticing a standstill in the school-age population in Palm Beach County. While our enrollment remains steady, more students are withdrawing as families relocate. This, combined with the expansion of school choice programs like Florida’s Step Up for Students voucher system, increases competition among schools.
We’re also mindful of broader trends, like declining U.S. birth rates, which could reduce future student numbers nationwide. These long-term challenges require thoughtful preparation while addressing current needs.
How is SouthTech Academy addressing enrollment trends?
SouthTech Academy’s enrollment remains stable, though we’re seeing signs of potential shifts as more families move out of the area. The expansion of school choice programs also presents both opportunities and increased competition.
Historically referred to as “the best-kept secret in Palm Beach County,” we’ve worked hard to raise awareness about our school. We’ve participated in community events and media outreach to ensure people know what we offer.
These efforts are yielding results. For instance, our recent open house for prospective students and families was one of the best attended in years. By increasing our visibility, we’re ensuring SouthTech Academy is well-positioned in a competitive educational landscape.
