Robert Allen, President, The Allen CPA Firm PLLC
Invest: spoke with Robert Allen, president of The Allen CPA Firm, about the economic signals shaping Houston’s business climate, the impact of AI on accounting, and how demographic shifts are influencing demand for professional services. “In this new economy, flexibility is key,” Allen said.
What major economic changes or trends are you seeing that have affected your clients and your operations in Houston?
Technology is evolving quickly, and AI is the most significant shift we’re seeing. It’s being integrated into the software platforms we already use, particularly in tax preparation. Artificial intelligence is now embedded in tools like Microsoft Copilot, Gemini, and ChatGPT, and it is becoming part of everyday workflow.
There are clear benefits. AI helps streamline repetitive tasks, organize data, and improve efficiency. It can assist with research and accelerate how we analyze tax and accounting questions. That kind of productivity gain is meaningful in a profession built on precision and deadlines.
At the same time, it is not perfect. Professional review and judgment remain essential. In accounting, you cannot rely on automation alone. The role of the CPA is shifting toward oversight, validation, and strategic interpretation rather than purely mechanical work.
Beyond technology, Houston continues to experience growth, largely supported by oil and gas. From our firm’s perspective, the overall climate has been positive. Client demand remains strong, and business activity continues at a healthy pace.
While traditional software helps us report what happened, AI excels at forecasting what could happen. It can scan thousands of data points to identify tax-saving opportunities or potential audit triggers long before the filing deadline. This moves the CPA from a “historian” role into a “forward-looking strategist.”
Texas continues to attract companies and population growth. How is this momentum influencing the demand for your services?
Migration is a major factor. We continue to see individuals and business owners relocating from higher-tax states to Texas. When someone moves from California or New York, their tax situation changes significantly. They need guidance to understand the impact of that move, and that creates demand for our services.
Houston also significantly benefits from its status as a premier international hub. Because of the energy sector, the city attracts professionals from around the world. That diversity shows up in our client base and contributes to a dynamic business environment.
Another critical market factor is the accelerating retirement of Baby Boomer CPAs. We consistently receive calls from prospective clients whose long-time advisors have transitioned out of practice. That industry-wide transition is creating significant opportunities for firms like ours that are prepared to step in, ensure seamless service continuity, and provide a modern approach to long-term financial planning.
Which industries are driving the most activity for your firm right now?
We see consistent demand from service-based businesses, including doctors, attorneys, engineers, and other professionals. These clients typically require strategic tax planning and ongoing advisory support as their businesses grow and evolve.
We are also seeing strong interest in real estate. Many individuals are exploring ways to generate passive income through short-term rentals, investment properties, or property development. Real estate continues to be a preferred strategy for wealth-building among entrepreneurs relocating to Houston.
While I do not have statistical data to cite specific growth rates by sector, our day-to-day experience reflects steady activity across professional services and real estate-related ventures.
How are inflation and rising costs affecting your clients?
Inflation is tangible. Consumers feel it in everyday purchases, and business owners feel it in labor, materials, and supply chains. We have clients who have been directly impacted by tariffs and increased sourcing costs, forcing them to raise prices for their customers.
Higher costs often lead to wage adjustments, as employers must remain competitive in attracting talent. This creates a cycle where businesses must balance pricing strategy with margin protection. Owners are increasingly attentive to operational efficiency and expense management.
Are business owners more focused on growth or cost control right now?
It is a combination of both. Growth remains a priority, especially for businesses with healthy margins. Owners are exploring new ventures, partnerships, and expansion strategies.
At the same time, cost discipline is critical. Businesses are evaluating sourcing options, renegotiating vendor relationships, and implementing process improvements. For example, if importing materials becomes more expensive, some may look to domestic production or alternative regions. Strategic flexibility is becoming essential.
Are there specific compliance areas businesses should be monitoring closely?
International transactions are one of the most important areas. Reporting requirements related to foreign activity carry significant penalties if not handled properly. Businesses engaged in cross-border transactions must ensure accurate and timely filings.
From our perspective, asking the right questions early is crucial. Identifying foreign exposure upfront helps prevent compliance issues later.
How are you navigating the talent market and workforce changes in the accounting profession?
The accounting profession is experiencing both retirements and workforce shifts. To remain competitive, we focus heavily on culture and flexibility.
We recently onboarded an enrolled agent, and one of the primary reasons the position was attractive was the ability to work remotely. Post-pandemic, professionals value flexibility more than ever.
In this new economy, flexibility is key, and that philosophy guides how we operate. We encourage ownership of work, minimize micromanagement, and allow team members to manage their schedules responsibly. Accountability is maintained, but autonomy is respected.
We also provide incentives and bonuses, but cultural alignment and flexibility are what truly differentiate us, especially when competing against large national firms.
How is technology changing your client experience and internal operations?
Technology allows us to operate efficiently and conveniently. Clients can upload documents through a secure portal, meet with us virtually, and complete the signing process digitally. Many prefer this approach because it saves time and eliminates travel.
Internally, we rely on digital collaboration tools, including video meetings and shared online workspaces. These systems allow our team to remain aligned regardless of physical location.
However, we also recognize that not every client prefers digital interaction. For those who are less comfortable with technology, we provide more traditional options. Serving multiple generations requires adaptability.
Looking ahead, what are your priorities for the next two to three years?
Our priorities center on continued growth and the strategic integration of technological advancement. We are committed to investing in sophisticated tools that not only improve efficiency but also elevate the client service our firm is known for. As more CPAs retire, we see an opportunity to responsibly expand our client base.
For Houston overall, the outlook remains positive, supported by the energy sector and continued migration. However, external factors such as tariffs, geopolitical instability, and policy shifts could influence growth trajectories.
AI will also reshape workforce dynamics. While automation may reduce certain tasks, it will also create new opportunities in oversight, analysis, and strategic advisory roles. The challenge will be ensuring professionals adapt and upskill accordingly.
Is there anything else you would like to highlight?
Houston remains a strong market for entrepreneurs. Its diversity, scale, and business-friendly climate create meaningful opportunities. Having lived in several other states, I believe Houston offers a uniquely supportive environment for business owners. What truly sets this city apart is its unmatched resilience and its status as a global gateway, offering a rare combination of local grit and international reach.
We are approaching 12 years in business, and it has been a privilege to serve this community. Helping clients navigate complexity and build stability is at the core of what we do, and we remain optimistic about Houston’s long-term potential.
