Amos McDonald, Market President – Houston, Southside Bank

Amos McDonald, Market President - Houston, Southside BankIn an interview with Invest:, Amos McDonald, market president for Houston at Southside Bank, discussed the institution’s expansion strategy in one of the fastest-growing markets in Texas. He highlighted the bank’s relationship-driven model, local decision-making approach, and focus on serving commercial clients with personalized solutions. “At the end of the day, transactions are what drive decisions for our clients — and we focus on delivering on those, one interaction at a time,” he said.

What key trends have had the biggest impact on your business and clients over the past year?
Southside Bank, a 65-year-old publicly traded institution headquartered in East Texas, is currently undergoing a period of growth and transition. With approximately $8.5 billion in assets and a network of locations across the state, the bank is expanding its footprint into major metropolitan markets, particularly Houston.

The growth of the Texas Triangle — including Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, Austin, and San Antonio — is creating significant opportunities. Houston, in particular, stands out due to its economic diversity, strong industrial base, and continued population growth. The bank has been actively building its presence in the region, expanding its team and investing in physical infrastructure to demonstrate long-term commitment.

This expansion is not only about increasing lending activity but also about building brand awareness and establishing deeper relationships within the local business community.

Where are you seeing the greatest opportunities for growth in Houston?
The bank takes an industry-agnostic approach, focusing instead on businesses that contribute to economic growth and align with its relationship-driven model. Rather than targeting specific sectors, the emphasis is on identifying clients that are adding value to the community and demonstrate strong long-term potential.

Houston’s diverse economy — spanning healthcare, manufacturing, real estate, and logistics — provides a wide range of opportunities. The bank is leveraging this diversity by engaging with business leaders across industries and fostering connections through events, roundtables, and advisory interactions.

This approach allows the bank to build meaningful relationships while gaining a deeper understanding of client needs, ultimately positioning it as a trusted partner rather than just a financial service provider.

How are you navigating risks and opportunities in commercial real estate?
Commercial real estate remains a key area of focus, though market conditions vary significantly across submarkets. Rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach, the bank evaluates each transaction individually, with a strong emphasis on the experience and track record of the sponsor.

Certain segments, such as office, continue to present challenges, while others — including industrial and warehouse space — are experiencing strong demand. Multifamily has shown some signs of softening but remains a resilient asset class over the long term.

By leveraging its deep knowledge of the Texas market and long-standing relationships with developers and investors, the bank is able to identify opportunities while managing risk effectively.

How are current macroeconomic conditions shaping your strategy?
The high-interest-rate environment has led to a shift in client expectations. While earlier forecasts anticipated rate cuts, businesses are now adjusting to the likelihood of sustained higher rates.

Stronger companies are adapting by closely managing cash flow and maintaining balanced financial positions. There is also continued optimism about the long-term growth of Texas and Houston, which is driving ongoing investment activity.

Clients are increasingly seeking banking partners that can grow alongside them, offer local decision-making, and provide personalized service. This dynamic aligns well with the bank’s positioning as a mid-sized institution that combines scale with flexibility.

How do you attract and retain talent in a competitive banking environment?
The bank’s approach to talent is centered on empowering bankers to build and maintain long-term client relationships. Unlike larger institutions that segment clients based on size or industry, Southside allows bankers to grow their portfolios organically without transferring clients as they scale.

This continuity is highly valued by both clients and bankers, fostering stronger relationships and greater trust. It also creates a more attractive environment for experienced professionals seeking autonomy and the ability to deliver comprehensive service.

By prioritizing relationship ownership and long-term engagement, the bank is able to attract top talent and differentiate itself in a competitive market.

How do you balance digital innovation with relationship-based service?
Technology plays an important role in delivering efficient banking services, particularly as client expectations evolve. The bank emphasizes ease of use, enabling clients to conduct transactions, manage accounts, and access services through digital platforms.

However, technology is viewed as a complement to — rather than a replacement for — personal relationships. Clients still value direct access to bankers and responsive service, especially when navigating complex financial decisions.

The goal is to create a seamless experience where digital tools enhance convenience while maintaining the human connection that defines the bank’s approach.

What are your top priorities for the Houston market in the coming years?
Looking ahead, the bank’s primary focus is on sustained, strategic growth in Houston. This includes expanding its client base, strengthening its team, and increasing its visibility within the community.

Attracting high-quality clients and delivering consistent, high-level service will remain central to this strategy. Referrals from satisfied clients are expected to play a key role in driving growth, reinforcing the importance of strong relationships and execution.

In addition, the bank aims to deepen its involvement in the local community through partnerships, events, and advisory initiatives. By combining financial expertise with a commitment to service, it seeks to position itself as a trusted partner in Houston’s continued economic expansion.
