Jorge Gonzalez, Vice Chairman & CEO, City National Bank

Jorge Gonzalez, Vice Chairman & CEO, City National BankIn an interview with Invest:, Jorge Gonzalez, vice chairman and CEO of City National Bank, discussed the bank’s growth strategy, Florida’s economic momentum, and the importance of culture in building a successful organization. “I firmly believe that culture is the backbone of any strategy,” Gonzalez said.

What strategic decisions and inflection points have fueled City National Bank’s transformation, and what lessons have you learned along the way?

When I joined City National Bank of Florida in 2009, we were just shy of $3 billion in assets, and we are going to finish this year close to $30 billion. It has been a 10X growth trajectory over that period of time.

As I think about what drove that success, the first factor is our focus on client relationships. We put our clients first and build strategies around supporting their objectives and their experience. We differentiate ourselves through relationships, service, and access to decision-makers. We have positioned ourselves as the large-bank alternative for the marketplace, providing the capabilities of a larger institution while maintaining a personal approach.

We have also focused heavily on our employees, making sure they have the tools, work environment, and culture needed to succeed. Another key part of our strategy has been steady, thoughtful expansion throughout Florida. We started as a Miami-centric institution, and today we are active across the state, with a focus on markets such as Orlando, Tampa, Palm Beach, and Broward County. That gives us a presence in the economic hubs driving Florida. Our business model has proven successful not only in Miami, but throughout the state.

How do you balance investments in digital banking technology with the personalized, relationship-driven approach that has long been a hallmark of City National Bank?

Technology has become more important over the course of my career in banking, but at CNB, we continue to lead with people. Our approach is grounded in the belief that banking, at its core, is a relationship-driven business, particularly when clients are making complex or high-stakes financial decisions. We have created an ecosystem around our employees that gives them the best data, technology, AI, and platforms available so they can provide an exceptional client experience.

We are not looking to replace the human element in banking; rather, we are using technology to enhance it. By investing in the right tools, we empower our bankers to operate more efficiently and focus more of their time on what matters most—building relationships, understanding client needs, and providing tailored guidance.

When people are making important financial decisions, whether personal or institutional, they still want to speak with someone they trust. Clients want both convenience and personal interaction, so our approach is to lead with people while equipping them with the tools needed to deliver the best possible service.

What opportunities are you seeing across Florida’s commercial banking landscape, and how is City National Bank helping clients capitalize on that growth?

Florida has experienced extraordinary growth. While much of the attention has focused on the post-COVID period, the state was already on a strong trajectory before then. The pandemic accelerated trends that were already underway.

One significant change has been the increase in domestic investment that we’re seeing pour into the market. Businesses, employers, and individuals are relocating to Florida for the long term, creating a more stable economic environment and putting down roots here. That growth creates opportunities across all areas of banking, including commercial banking, real estate, private banking, wealth management, and capital markets.

Many of these clients are new to Florida, so our role goes beyond banking services. We help connect them with resources, relationships, and local knowledge that can support their transition. Having operated in Florida for more than 80 years, we understand the marketplace and can help clients navigate it successfully.

How is the bank adapting its private banking and wealth management offerings to meet the expectations of high-net-worth individuals, family offices, and business owners?

Today’s clients expect a more integrated approach. They want solutions that address both their business and personal financial needs.

Our model at CNB is relationship-driven rather than transaction-driven. Whether clients are focused on commercial banking, real estate investments, wealth management, or succession planning, we aim to provide a comprehensive solution through a single point of contact. That approach simplifies the process and helps clients achieve their financial objectives more efficiently.

What trends are you seeing in cross-border banking, investment, and wealth flows, and how is City National Bank positioning itself to serve international and regional clients?

Miami has long been the gateway to Latin America, and that role continues to grow in importance as South Florida attracts more companies and investment.

We are fortunate to have a parent company with more than 80 years of experience in Latin America, combined with City National Bank’s strong presence in South Florida. Together, those capabilities position us well to serve clients operating across borders.

We have expanded our international private banking and international corporate banking businesses and continue to develop products and services that support international clients and trade-related activity. As opportunities emerge throughout the region, we believe Miami will continue to play a central role as a gateway market, and we are well-positioned to help clients take advantage of those opportunities.

What differentiates City National Bank in today’s competitive marketplace?

Clients should never have to choose between scale and service. Our goal at CNB is to provide the products, capabilities, and resources of a larger institution while maintaining a highly personalized, relationship-driven experience.

We have intentionally built the bank to operate as a “big-bank alternative” – combining sophisticated solutions and a strong balance sheet with local decision-making and deep market knowledge, enabling clients to move quickly and confidently through complex transactions and growth cycles.

In today’s environment, scale matters more than ever. Banks must continue investing in technology, compliance, talent, and innovation to remain competitive.

Our size and positioning allow us to make those investments while staying agile and client-focused. We are able to offer advanced digital tools, data-driven insights, and a full suite of banking capabilities, but we deliver them through dedicated bankers who understand their clients and markets.

What truly differentiates CNB is that we lead with relationships. We are, at our core, a face-to-face bank. Culture is a key driver of that experience and  it shapes how we make decisions, serve our clients, and grow responsibly. We have built a culture grounded in innovation, accountability, and entrepreneurship—one where our teams take ownership and are empowered to deliver for clients and communities. This alignment between culture, strategy, and execution enables us to scale thoughtfully without losing the personal approach that defines CNB.

How do leadership, talent development, and workplace culture contribute to the bank’s continued growth and long-term success?

I firmly believe that culture needs to be the backbone of any strategy. You can have a strong strategy, but without the right culture, execution becomes difficult. By contrast, organizations with strong cultures often outperform expectations because people are aligned around a common mission.

At City National Bank, culture is central to everything we do. We focus on helping clients achieve their goals and building solutions around their needs. We are also committed to creating an environment where employees feel valued, connected, and empowered to succeed.

Our people are the ultimate driver of our success. We believe that happy employees lead to happy clients, and if our clients are happy, everything else falls into place. Our employees benefit from best-in-class benefits, flexibility, generous incentive programs, recognition programs, personal and professional development, and we are always looking to improve their experience. Our employee experience is just as important as our client experience, because one is a direct driver of the other.

One example is our effort to bring our Miami-Dade County employees together into a single headquarters office, creating greater collaboration and strengthening the sense of community within the organization. We believe that stronger employee engagement leads to better outcomes for clients.

Giving back is also an important part of our culture. We actively support organizations throughout the communities where we operate because we believe that strong communities create stronger businesses. Supporting those communities is part of our DNA and an important element of who we are as an organization.

Our teams contribute thousands of hours of volunteer work, provide financial literacy, and serve on boards. We support community organizations like United Way, Miami Dade College, Children’s Trust, FIU, Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, and many more because we know that first we have a duty to give back to the communities that allow us to succeed and because these investments build a stronger, better community for all of us to live in and grow. The most important recognition of this has been the 24 consecutive years that we have received an “Outstanding” Community Reinvestment Act rating, recognizing the contributions that our employees and organization make to building stronger communities in the markets we serve.

How is City National Bank of Florida evolving its international banking platform to meet the growing demand from global clients establishing a presence in Florida?

As a bank headquartered in Miami, international banking has long been a focus of ours. CNB is aligning its strategy with the powerful wave of global migration shaping Florida’s economy, and in many cases, we’re helping to facilitate that activity. As more businesses and families relocate to South Florida, CNB is meeting the needs of an increasingly international client base.

International banking is central to the bank’s long-term growth, strengthened by its relationship with our parent company, Bci, and its deep expertise across Latin America.

The recent launch of our International Corporate division, alongside the continued growth of our International Private Banking platform, underscores a focused effort to serve mid-sized international companies, which is often an overlooked segment. Dedicated country desks, staffed by native experts from key markets such as Mexico, Chile, and Brazil, further enhance CNB’s ability to deliver culturally informed, tailored guidance.

How have South Florida’s professional sports teams and major sporting events contributed to economic growth and community development across the region?

South Florida’s sports ecosystem has evolved into a powerful economic engine, fueling tourism, infrastructure investment, and long-term community impact. Miami stands out as the only global market that hosts all major U.S. professional sports leagues alongside a Formula 1 Grand Prix, creating a unique platform for year-round economic activity and international visibility.

Florida leads the nation in sports tourism, generating an estimated $128 billion in economic impact, including more than $52 billion in direct visitor spending. A significant share of that activity is concentrated in South Florida, driven by a combination of world-class venues and high-profile franchises.

The transformation of Hard Rock Stadium into a premier global venue has positioned the region to host marquee events such as the Super Bowl, College Football National Championship, Formula 1, the Miami Open, and most recently, the FIFA World Cup. These events consistently drive demand across hotels, restaurants, and transportation, injecting hundreds of millions of dollars into the local economy each year.

Beyond the economic impact, sports play a critical role in community development. Organizations like the Orange Bowl Committee have reinvested tens of millions of dollars into local initiatives, including park renovations and school improvements, benefiting hundreds of thousands of residents. Partnerships such as CNB’s role as the Official Bank of the University of Miami further highlight how sports can connect businesses, institutions, and communities while supporting regional growth. This combination of economic scale and community reinvestment underscores how sports continue to shape South Florida’s growth and global profile.
