Joe Bob Edwards, President & CEO, Flowco Inc.
Invest: spoke with Joe Bob Edwards, president and CEO of oil-field services company Flowco Inc., about the company’s first year as a public entity, its acquisition of Valiant Artificial Lift, its long-term growth strategy, and how the sector is trending. “There are too many companies in our space, and we believe consolidation will continue,” Edwards said.
Flowco became a public company in 2025. What have been some of the biggest lessons, and how has the experience shaped your strategy?
Jan. 17, 2025, was our first trading day. Our strategy has remained the same as it was as a private company. It has simply been refined, and we have had the opportunity to explain it more consistently to public investors.
We are the leading player in production optimization solutions for oil and gas companies in the United States. Our customer base includes some of the largest oil and gas companies in the world, and the solutions we provide are critical to their operations. With the changing geopolitical landscape, the importance of U.S. oil and gas production has only increased. Flowco sits at the center of that effort because if our equipment is not delivering every day, oil and gas will not flow from the field to the point of consumption.
Since going public, we have continued to execute on our growth strategy, including expanding the company’s capabilities through acquisitions, while staying true to who we are as an oil-field services company.
How does the acquisition of Valiant Artificial Lift fit into Flowco’s long-term growth plans?
The addition of Valiant allows Flowco to provide customers with the two primary early-stage production methods: electrical submersible pumps and gas lift. We already led the market in gas lift, and now we can offer customers either solution while helping them determine which is best based on technical data.
As wells mature, the optimal production method changes. By adding ESP capabilities, we can support customers throughout the life cycle of a well and provide the right production solution at every stage. That is why the acquisition fits so well within our product portfolio.
What role do automation, AI, and data analytics play across the energy sector, and how is Flowco implementing these technologies?
Our clients are collecting enormous amounts of data from every well, every second of every day. Their challenge, and our opportunity, is helping them turn that information into better and faster decisions.
Our digital solutions work alongside our production equipment to help customers improve decision-making. Eventually, more of those decisions may become autonomous, but the industry is not there yet. The human element remains critical, especially in decisions that directly impact production and cash flow.
We believe our technology is among the best in the industry for helping customers make informed operational decisions, and we expect to continue playing an important role as the industry evolves.
How are customer priorities around emissions reduction influencing the solutions Flowco is creating?
We lead the market by offering customers a profitable way to reduce methane emissions. Our vapor recovery unit captures emissions that would otherwise be released or flared and allows customers to monetize those molecules instead.
We are proud of our leadership position in that market because it delivers both environmental and financial benefits. Our customers continue adopting the technology because it improves their bottom line while reducing emissions, regardless of changes in the regulatory environment.
Where do you see the oil-field services sector heading, and how is Flowco positioning itself for what comes next?
As a public company, we communicate our strategy clearly to investors, who evaluate our execution every day. We have consistently stated that we want to be a consolidator within the oil-field services industry.
The Valiant acquisition was one step in that direction, and we continue to have an active M&A pipeline. There are too many companies in our space, and we believe consolidation will continue. We want to lead that effort and strengthen our position by bringing together complementary businesses.
What advantages does Houston provide for companies like Flowco, and what makes you optimistic about its future as an energy hub?
Houston is the capital of energy worldwide. Not only are the producers here, but so is the supply chain that supports them. We fit into that supply chain perfectly.
The city also has a culture of innovation, a highly educated workforce, and strong support for the energy industry. Houston is our headquarters, and it remains central to who we are as a company. While we operate more than 50 locations across the United States, Houston is home and remains at the center of what makes Flowco tick.
What are Flowco’s top priorities over the next three to five years?
The No. 1 priority is execution. As a public company, our investors will hold us accountable for the expectations we set, so we must consistently deliver on what we tell the market we are going to do.
We also want to remain focused on our customers. As we grow and expand our product portfolio, we cannot lose sight of the relationships and service that made us successful. We want to continue delivering high-quality solutions while doing more for our existing customers.
We want to be seen as the leaders in production optimization. We are viewed that way in the United States, but in the long term, we intend to grow internationally. Countries in the Middle East, Latin America, and parts of Asia are developing unconventional oil and gas resources using techniques pioneered in the United States. We want to bring our expertise to those markets as part of our long-term growth strategy.
Is there anything else you would like to highlight?
We are really proud of the people we have at Flowco. We have brought together multiple entrepreneurial organizations, and one of our biggest priorities is building a unified culture.
A centerpiece of that effort is Flowco University, our talent development initiative. We are investing in the resources and training our employees need to continue growing professionally and becoming more valuable to the company.
I want Flowco to be not only a great place to work, but a great place to build a career. That means providing employees with opportunities to develop over the long term. I am really proud of that effort, and I believe it sets us apart in our corner of the energy industry.
