Natara Branch, CEO, Houston Exponential

Natara Branch, CEO, Houston ExponentialInvest: spoke with Natara Branch, CEO of Houston Exponential, about Houston’s startup ecosystem, the region’s cross-industry strengths, and the next phase of growth for local companies. Branch said Houston’s innovation story is moving beyond awareness to measurable results. “It is an exciting time to be in the Greater Houston startup ecosystem,” Branch said.

How would you describe the current state of Houston’s startup ecosystem, and what has changed most over the past year?

The state of it, in one word, is growing. It is an exciting time to be in the Greater Houston startup ecosystem. We went through cycles where everyone got excited, then tried to figure out what came next. Today, we are at a pivotal point where many startups are ready to move into the growth stage, and some are already beyond that. They are beginning to gain recognition beyond Houston, nationally and globally.

Houston is an extremely global city. It is one of the most diverse cities in the country from a global perspective, and we do global business. We are a gateway to and from the United States, and people are starting to recognize that you can build significant companies here. The biggest change over the past year is that we are no longer trying to define our startup ecosystem. We know what it is, and now we are focused on growing it.

What gaps still need to be addressed for Houston to be globally competitive as a startup market?

I do not think we have gaps in terms of innovation, technology, or ideas. Houston is where innovation gets real. We do hard things at scale, whether that is health, energy, or space.

The challenge is awareness. Houston is a humble city, and we have not always been vocal about what is happening here. People are starting to discover that we have significant innovation underway, but we need to continue telling that story without losing the humility that defines the region.

Which industries are driving the most growth, and where are you seeing the strongest interest from outside investors?

One of Houston’s biggest strengths is that we are not defined by a single industry. People often associate us with energy, but we are also home to the largest medical center in the world, a growing commercialization ecosystem, a thriving space sector, and strong sports and entertainment industries.

That diversity is our unique proposition. Through initiatives like H-Town Roundup, we showcase innovation across industries because something significant is always happening in Houston. We are not good at one thing. We have the opportunity to be great at multiple things.

How has Houston Exponential evolved as the ecosystem has matured?

We are about to celebrate our 10th year, and it has been incredible to see the evolution of the ecosystem. Houston has attracted events like AfroTech and robotics conferences that bring thousands of people to the region, and more people are recognizing what is happening here.

Houston Exponential has the opportunity to convene stakeholders across industries while working closely with partners like Houston First, the Greater Houston Partnership, and the Center for Houston’s Future. Our role is not simply to promote an incubator or accelerator. It is to promote a robust innovation ecosystem that spans multiple industries.

What makes Houston attractive for entrepreneurs, investors, and talent?

One of Houston’s greatest strengths is accessibility. Regardless of your background, there are people here who will pick up the phone and try to help you. That willingness to support entrepreneurs is a defining characteristic of the region.

Houston also allows people to build careers across industries. I started in oil and gas, moved into sports, and now work in technology and innovation. That kind of mobility is possible because Houston has so many thriving sectors.

I tell students at our academic institutions that they are getting an eye into the world. People from across the globe live and work here, and our students are naturally prepared to do business internationally because they experience that diversity every day. Combined with an affordable cost of living and a high quality of life, Houston is an exceptional place to build both a career and a business.

How does Houston Exponential connect corporations, universities, and public partners to support startups?

Houston has industries that naturally complement one another. The sports sector is a good example. Sports technology increasingly focuses on rehabilitation and performance, and Houston also has the largest medical center in the world. Those strengths create opportunities for collaboration and innovation.

Houston Exponential brings those industries together. We are industry agnostic, so we help startups across every sector by introducing them to corporations, institutions, and partners that may not have otherwise connected. That ability to create relationships across industries helps drive innovation throughout Greater Houston.

What should investors and business leaders watch for in Houston over the next five years?

Within the next five years, we are focused on achieving more liquidity events. We have companies that are approaching the stage where they could experience an IPO, acquisition or another significant milestone.

Our priority is making sure those companies have the financial support they need to reach that next stage. We have made tremendous progress in capital activation, and successful liquidity events will attract even more investor attention to Houston’s innovation ecosystem.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

The one thing I would emphasize is that this is an inclusive region, both demographically and geographically. We support companies from pre-seed through growth stage, and we want the entire ecosystem to succeed, not just individual companies.

As the ecosystem grows stronger, people will increasingly see the results for themselves. We already have companies that are becoming success stories, and I expect many of them to gain national recognition in the coming years.

This is an accessible region with a multitude of industries, from sports to space and everything in between. We welcome people to do business here, mentor here, and help build the next generation of companies.
