Olga Gonzalez Mayor City of Kissimmee

Mayor Olga Gonzalez of the city of Kissimmee sat down with Invest: to discuss her office’s priorities in ensuring every resident benefits from the growth coming to the city. “For a city our size, we’re leading the way in ensuring low-income residents get to share in the economic growth. Kissimmee is growing fast,” she said. “We’ve got what it takes, and people are noticing.”

As Kissimmee’s first female Hispanic mayor, what would you say are the biggest achievements made by your office?

Our proudest achievement is the grand opening of Mosaic at Lake Toho, a residential project that’s a vital part of our Kissimmee Lakefront Park renovation and helps connect our community. We’re also excited about Haven on Vine, which will provide housing and support services. We’ve managed to keep taxes stable thanks to careful planning. With nine new projects coming up, including apartments near our medical corridor, Kissimmee is on a strong growth path. We’ve got what it takes, and people are noticing. I’m grateful for our amazing city staff and community, and I look forward to what’s next for Kissimmee.

How is Haven on Vine addressing affordable housing availability in Kissimmee?

The Haven on Vine project is a crucial step in improving affordable housing in Kissimmee. It will provide 83 units designated for affordable housing and 40 for emergency and transitional housing. This initiative addresses immediate housing needs and supports low-income families, helping them achieve stability and security. The Haven on Vine plays a key role in our ongoing efforts to ensure a diverse range of housing options in our city.

What is the current pulse on women in leadership?

Women are making a big impact in leadership roles today. Their ability to understand and address social issues is truly making a difference. More women are stepping up and supporting each other, which helps more people find the courage to follow their passions and stand up for what they believe in.

As Kissimmee’s first female Hispanic mayor, I’m grateful to be part of this change and excited to see how women shape our community and make a real difference.

What initiatives have been put in place in Kissimmee to ensure economic opportunities are equitable?

In Kissimmee, we’re working hard to make sure everyone has a fair chance at economic success. We support small and minority-owned businesses with helpful resources and affordable assistance. More and more people are coming from other countries and bringing their businesses. Our Community Redevelopment Agencies, Downtown Kissimmee CRA and Vine Street CRA, are focused on increasing activity and connecting visitors to local businesses and restaurants. We also listen to our community to ensure our plans work for everyone. Our goal is to build a thriving, inclusive economy for all.

How have ongoing market changes impacted the city?

Kissimmee has been privileged. Market changes have shaped Kissimmee’s growth. We’re seeing more new developments to keep up with the rising demand for housing and businesses. While fluctuating property values and rent prices have posed challenges, we’re addressing these by investing in affordable housing and improving our infrastructure. Our goal is to adapt to these changes in a way that supports everyone in our community.

What are your top priorities for Kissimmee in the next two to three years?

As I prepare to step down as Mayor, I want to ensure we’ve laid a strong foundation for Kissimmee’s future. My top priorities have been advancing housing projects for low-income families and those experiencing homelessness. Additionally, setting the stage for a stronger economy with quality job opportunities and a vibrant downtown is crucial. By focusing on these areas, we’re paving the way for future leaders to build on our progress and continue growing a community where everyone has a chance to succeed.
