Greater Orlando schools drive workforce readiness through innovation
Writer: Chérie Lynn Canada
July 2024 — Educational leaders in the Greater Orlando region are pioneering innovative methods to enhance workforce development and prepare students for future careers. These initiatives are crucial as they aim to bridge the gap between academic learning and the practical skills needed in the workforce — one of the most pressing issues across industries today.
Florida Institute of Technology has launched programs focusing on experiential learning, where students engage in real-world projects with industry partners. This approach ensures that graduates are not only theoretically proficient but also practically skilled, ready to meet the demands of the modern job market. For instance, their collaboration with tech companies provides students with hands-on experience in fields such as cybersecurity, aerospace engineering, and information technology.
“I firmly believe that the future of education will be deeply intertwined with technology, permeating every aspect of learning regardless of the field or discipline,” John Nicklow, President, Florida Institute of Technology, told Invest: in a recent conversation.
“By leveraging both asynchronous and synchronous learning opportunities, we can ensure that students have access to state-of-the-art technology and resources. This approach enables us to facilitate knowledge sharing and creation, fostering an environment where students can thrive and succeed in an increasingly digital world,” Nicklow continued.
Lake Technical College also offers a variety of programs that are directly aligned with local industry needs, ranging from automotive technology to healthcare services. These programs are designed with input from industry leaders to ensure that the skills taught are up-to-date and relevant. The college provides students with opportunities for apprenticeships and internships, allowing them to gain valuable on-the-job experience before they graduate.
“Technical colleges like ours aim to serve as integral providers in workforce preparation and economic development. Our model is intricately designed to equip students with the skills necessary to thrive in medium to high-wage jobs through career certification training. At Lake Tech, we primarily offer career certificate training and applied technology diplomas, serving as the entry point for students into their chosen fields,” DeAnna Thomas, Executive Director of Lake Technical College recently told Invest:.
Orange County Public Schools (OCPS), has been instrumental in advancing STEM education through the “Future Ready” initiative. This program focuses on equipping students with the necessary skills for the 21st-century workforce, particularly in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. OCPS has introduced various hands-on learning opportunities such as robotics clubs and coding workshops, and has formed partnerships with local tech companies. These collaborations help align the school curriculum with current job market trends, giving students a competitive edge as they transition from school to the workforce.

“In our efforts to reimagine education, we have engaged in conversations with various sectors of our community to explore better ways to prepare students not just for graduation but also for meaningful contributions to the economy and society. Many industries are seeking skilled workers, prioritizing practical skills over traditional degrees. Soft skills, such as collaboration, problem-solving, and effective communication, are highly valued, alongside attributes like punctuality and responsibility,” Maria Vazquez, superintendent of Orange County Public Schools told Invest:.
Beyond individual institutional efforts, the Greater Orlando region benefits from a collaborative ecosystem that brings together educators, businesses, and government agencies. The Orlando Economic Partnership (OEP) plays a crucial role in this ecosystem, working to align education and workforce development initiatives with the region’s economic goals.
