Harman Johal, Wealth Management Regional Executive, U.S. Bank

Harman Johal, Wealth Management Regional Executive, U.S. BankInvest: spoke with Harman Johal, wealth management regional executive at U.S. Bank, about sustaining momentum in Houston’s fast-growing market. “Maintaining momentum is often harder than building it,” Johal said. He discussed the bank’s expanded business banking presence, the evolving expectations of clients, and the role of proactive planning in uncertain times.

What dynamics are influencing your wealth management strategy in Houston as you move into 2027?

Maintaining momentum is often harder than building it, especially when you are scaling across teams and expectations. You can start something and see early wins, but sustaining that energy, focus, and culture over five years is more challenging. At U.S. Bank, particularly within wealth management, we have not only maintained that momentum but increased it over the past 12 months. In fact, in Dallas, we now have an Affluent Wealth Management team, which serves clients who are growing their wealth.

One of the clearest examples is the expansion of our business banking presence in Houston. When we last spoke, our business banking team in Dallas was supporting Houston. Because of the success we were seeing and the level of engagement with clients and prospects, we established a full business banking team in Houston with dedicated leadership.

That expansion allows us to offer a truly integrated value proposition. A business owner in Houston can now address personal wealth management needs and business banking needs within one coordinated team. Clients do not want to navigate multiple institutions or disconnected teams. They want one relationship that can grow with them. That kind of integration also simplifies service for centers of influence, including attorneys, CPAs, and business brokers. Whether they are a company with 100 employees and $20 million in revenue or one that grows to thousands of employees and significantly higher revenue, we can continue to support them.

How would you describe the current demand for wealth management services in Houston, and what is driving that growth?

Houston remains one of the most dynamic markets in the country. Population growth is strong, and we continue to see an influx of affluent individuals and business owners relocating here. That is not accidental. People with significant assets move to cities where they see opportunity, economic diversity, and long-term growth potential.

Houston has diversified considerably over the past two decades. While energy remains foundational, we are also seeing growth in manufacturing, healthcare, technology, and finance. That diversification creates resilience and attracts talent and capital.

Another defining characteristic is diversity. Houston’s population reflects a wide range of backgrounds and global connections. Our wealth management team mirrors that diversity, which enables us to connect authentically with the communities we serve. Diversity is not just about representation. It brings different perspectives and strengthens how we approach problem-solving, client relationships, and long-term planning.

Last year, uncertainty was a recurring theme across sectors. How is your team responding to persistent inflation, interest rate pressures, and market volatility?

Uncertainty can actually be an opportunity. When markets are steady, some clients feel less urgency to seek advice. When conditions become more volatile, they are more open to proactive conversations.

Our approach is rooted in long-term relationships rather than transactions. When we first meet with a client, we work to understand not only what they want to accomplish today but what they envision three, five, or 10 years from now. That foundation allows us to respond to volatility without emotional decision-making.

For example, we recently worked with a doctor relocating to Houston to purchase a practice. His immediate priority was financing the business. However, through deeper conversations, we identified additional priorities, including asset protection, college planning for his children, and reviewing his existing investment portfolio to ensure it aligned with current market conditions.

Our role is to help clients prioritize competing objectives and remain proactive rather than reactive. When markets are volatile, there can be mispriced assets and overlooked opportunities. By engaging early and consistently, we help clients stay disciplined and focused on their long-term goals.

How are millennial and next-generation clients reshaping wealth management expectations?

The newer generation of investors is highly informed. They have access to more information than any previous generation and often arrive with thoughtful, well-researched questions. That is a positive development.

However, there is a distinction between having information and knowing how to apply it effectively. Financial decisions are highly personal. Advice must be tailored to an individual’s goals, risk tolerance, and time horizon.

We are seeing many younger clients actively seek guidance rather than attempting to navigate everything independently. Market volatility has reinforced the value of experienced advice. They want to understand how information applies specifically to them and are willing to engage in deeper conversations about cost, value, and long-term outcomes.

That level of engagement elevates the dialogue. It allows us to demonstrate the value we bring through comprehensive planning, disciplined strategy, and relationship-based advice.

How are you attracting and retaining talent to support this level of service?

Culture and credibility are central. U.S. Bank has built a reputation as a stable and ethical institution, and that matters deeply to both clients and employees. When professionals evaluate where to build their careers, they look for alignment between their personal values and the institution’s culture.

We have been recognized for workplace culture, support for women and veterans, and a strong ethical foundation. That credibility makes recruitment more effective. Culture is also collective. No single leader defines it. It is reinforced through collaboration, community engagement, and shared standards of service.

We also focus on hiring professionals who are active in the communities they serve. That presence strengthens relationships and reflects our commitment beyond financial performance. When clients entrust us with their assets, they expect stability, experience, and institutional strength. We are proud to represent one of the oldest and most established banks in the country, and we work to match that institutional strength with local engagement.

AI and technology continue to evolve rapidly. How is U.S. Bank approaching innovation while maintaining security and trust?

As one of the largest commercial banks in the country, we are continuously investing in technology, including AI-driven capabilities. Clients expect seamless digital experiences and strong data protection. Those are baseline expectations.

Our investments are focused on improving internal processes, enhancing efficiency, and delivering best-in-class client experiences while maintaining rigorous security standards. Innovation is not optional in this environment. It is necessary to meet evolving expectations from clients, employees, and investors alike.

Looking ahead three to five years, what are your top priorities for wealth management in Houston?

Our priorities remain consistent. First, we want to continue serving the Houston community as a credible and trusted institution. Growth in revenue and assets is important, but so is community impact. We are committed to balancing business performance with meaningful local engagement and service.

Second, we will continue to grow our team thoughtfully. As client needs evolve, we will expand lines of business where appropriate, as we did with business banking. That growth will be intentional, focused on adding the right talent and leadership at the right time.

Finally, collaboration will remain central. The increased momentum we are experiencing is the result of coordinated efforts across multiple teams within U.S. Bank. Sustaining and strengthening that collaboration will position us well for the next chapter of growth in Houston.
