2 min read July 2023 — Maury Regional Health’s new $115 million facility improvement plan has been announced, with new facilities, locations and new hires needed.

As the region’s population continues to grow alongside the demand for healthcare services, the expansion will aid Maury Regional Health in enhancing the patient care and their experience at the Maury Regional Medical Center campus.

“This will be the first major construction project at Maury Regional Medical Center in approximately 20 years to enhance the patient experience and expand access to care,” said CEO Martin Chaney. At last week’s unveiling ceremony, Chaney detailed how the organization has grown over the last 70 years, which today serves over 500,000 inpatients and an additional 1.5 million individuals through emergency services while delivering 90,000 babies since 1953.

The $115 million project will include two new floors on the center’s patient tower, a renovated Emergency Department with 10 additional treatment areas, bringing the total to 48, and a new childbirth floor expansion. The full scope of the project can be found here, and includes expansions for Maury Regional Health’s Heart Center, medical center renovations and a new ground floor cafeteria.

As part of the project, the organization will be expanding about 37 miles south to Lawrenceburg with the creation of a new healthpark. The facility will include a primary care and physician specialist clinic.

Maury Regional Health, which operates out of Columbia, is a nonprofit health system and — according to the press release — the largest healthcare provider between Nashville and Huntsville, Alabama. Its expansion also signifies new demand for healthcare talent, with Chaney stating in the press release, “As more patients continue to choose Maury Regional Health for their care, we are recruiting physicians to support growing service lines, offering additional services and expanding our facilities to meet the changing needs of our community.”

Funding for the project will include a variety of different sources, with the company including bond issuance, energy-as-a-service agreements, as well as state grants and vendor partnerships. Wold Architects & Engineers has been selected to lead the design of the project.

“On December 16, 1953, Maury Regional Health opened its doors and admitted our first patient.” Dr. Chaney said. “As we embark on this renovation and expansion plan, we strengthen our commitment to provide clinical excellence and compassionate care to our region for decades to come.”
