Robert Wyrick, Managing Director & CIO, Post Oak Private Wealth AdvisorsIn an interview with Invest:, Robert Wyrick, managing director and CIO of Post Oak Private Wealth Advisors, discussed AI-driven investment opportunities, market risks, Houston’s economic strengths, and the firm’s growth priorities. “I don’t think there’s ever been a better time to create wealth in the markets because of all that’s happening with AI,” Wyrick said.

How would you describe the investment environment today, and what changes have had the biggest impact on your clients?

It has to be everything AI. There is a huge focus on data center build-out across the country and certainly in Texas. The foundational investment opportunity has been in industrial companies involved in powering, designing, constructing, cooling, and operating these facilities. It is a way to participate in the technology revolution without necessarily owning technology stocks.

The speed of change in artificial intelligence is mind-boggling. Investors have valid concerns about the amount of money companies such as Google, Meta, and Amazon are spending on AI infrastructure and whether there will be a return on that investment. I compare it to the fiber-optic build-out before the dot-com era. Companies invested heavily because they knew demand would come. The difference today is that new data centers are reaching full utilization almost immediately. We simply do not have enough capacity.

Companies across virtually every sector are also finding ways to improve efficiency and accelerate processes through AI. One of the biggest questions is how this will affect the labor market. I think the impact will be significant. We are already seeing pressure on some entry-level roles, and I believe this will be comparable to the Industrial Revolution in terms of disruption, except faster and with a greater impact on white-collar professions.

I don’t think there’s ever been a better time to create wealth in the markets because of all that’s happening with AI. At the same time, there are risks associated with labor market disruption and how consumers ultimately adapt to these changes.

What concerns are business owners and high-net-worth individuals bringing to you most often in 2026?

The biggest concern is inflation. Economic growth has been strong and markets have performed well, but inflation has proven stickier than many expected.

Higher energy prices are a particular concern, especially for business owners who rely on borrowing capital or operate capital-intensive businesses. Energy costs affect almost every product and service, which then feeds into broader inflationary pressures. Inflation remains one of the key issues because it increases the likelihood of higher interest rates.

How is your firm helping clients balance growth opportunities with risks such as market concentration, inflation, and economic uncertainty?

There are two sides to what we do. One is financial planning, where we build sophisticated cash-flow models for clients. The other is investment management, which is where I spend most of my time.

Our role is to understand not only market risk but also the risks unique to each client. Someone employed by an energy company, for example, may already have significant exposure to that industry through both their career and personal investments. We seek to build portfolios that do not add unnecessary concentration risk.

We focus on maximizing upside potential while mitigating downside risk. Our core equity strategy has performed well because it has captured market gains while avoiding a disproportionate share of losses during periods of volatility.

One area we monitor closely is concentration within the broader market. The S&P 500 has become heavily weighted toward a small group of technology companies. While those businesses have delivered tremendous earnings growth, high expectations create risk. If a handful of large companies disappoint, the broader market can feel the impact.

For that reason, we are underweight technology and overweight industrials. It is another way to express optimism about AI and technological advancement while maintaining a more balanced risk profile.

What investment opportunities do you believe investors may be overlooking?

The next wave of opportunity will likely come from companies that successfully integrate AI into their operations. Investors have already rewarded the hyperscalers such as Amazon, Meta, and Google, along with the industrial companies supporting the infrastructure build-out.

Now the focus is shifting toward businesses that can use AI to improve efficiency, enhance customer service, accelerate research, and strengthen profitability. It is not limited to one sector. The winners will be those that adopt and implement these technologies most effectively within their industries.

What makes Houston and Texas ideal for people, businesses, talent, and the wealth management industry?

Houston is an incredibly vibrant and international city. The cost of living remains attractive compared to places such as New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago, while still offering the amenities of a major metropolitan area.

The region is home to many of the world’s largest energy companies, major financial institutions, and one of the busiest ports in the world. Employment opportunities remain strong because of the concentration of large employers and the continued strength of the energy sector.

There is also increasing investment in technology. Companies are expanding their footprint in the region, and Houston continues to attract new business activity. Combined with its size, diversity, and economic scale, Houston remains one of the most important economic centers in the country.

How are you attracting, retaining, and developing next-generation wealth managers?

It is a competitive market, and compensation is certainly important, but flexibility has become just as valuable.

Many younger professionals want greater control over where and how they work. Flexible schedules, remote work options, opportunities for advancement, and a positive workplace culture all play a significant role in attracting and retaining talent.

Employers have to adapt to those expectations if they want to remain competitive in today’s labor market.

What role do you see AI playing in wealth management, and how are you leveraging it within your firm?

The opportunities are almost endless. We are not using AI to make portfolio decisions, but we are using it to improve efficiency across the organization.

AI-powered note-taking, research support, and workflow management tools are already saving significant amounts of time. For example, when evaluating a company outside my normal area of focus, AI can help gather information, compare competitors, review financial data, and organize research far more quickly than traditional methods.

We are also seeing AI integrated into many of the core software platforms used throughout the wealth management industry, including financial planning, customer relationship management, and tax-related systems.

In our own firm, we are building tools that help improve collaboration with attorneys and other professional advisers. The goal is to create better outcomes for clients by improving communication and access to relevant information. We are still in the early stages, but we look for new opportunities to utilize these tools every day.

What are your top priorities for Post Oak Private Wealth over the next two to three years?

Growth remains a priority. We have been fortunate to receive recognition from organizations such as InvestmentNews, USA Today, and Texas Monthly, and much of that growth has been organic.

We have not relied heavily on marketing, but we are becoming more focused on maintaining visibility across AI-driven search platforms and other channels where prospective clients are increasingly seeking information.

Also, we want to grow in a way that preserves the high-touch, concierge-level service our clients expect. While we may add some personnel, our primary focus will be creating greater efficiency through technology so that we can continue to scale while maintaining the quality of service that has contributed to our success.
