2 min read August 2023 — Virtua Health is planning a new six-story tower at its Our Lady of Lourdes hospital campus.

First reported by TAPintoCamden, the Care Transformation Project plans include a new 254,155-square-foot pavilion tower addition to the Virtua Our Lady of Lourdes campus in Camden. The project will also include substantial renovations to the interior of the existing facilities.

The plans are a continuation of objectives Dennis Pullin, CEO and president of Virtua Health, detailed in an earlier interview for Invest: South Jersey 2022-2023, where he explained, “[Virtua] is continuing a large-scale renovation of two of our acute care locations: Virtua Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, which is our hub for tertiary care, and our hospital in Mount Holly.”

Additional details remain sparse, with Virtua stating the organization would refrain from commenting until meeting with the city’s urban planning board on Sept. 14. “After we receive and incorporate their input, we look forward to sharing more about the exciting renovations planned for the hospital,” reported TAPintoCamden.

“These improvements have resulted in the provision of sufficient vehicular parking to comply with the city’s parking requirements for now and upon completion of the proposed campus expansion,” notes an application document. The property’s on-site parking would increase from 226 to 326 spaces, with an additional 1,081 parking spots across the street. Virtua does not expect an increase in total beds.

The Care Transformation Project arrives as the hospital systems in the region continue to find avenues for growth amidst a shifting healthcare landscape. Cooper University Health Care is nearly a year into a $2 billion expansion, in addition to its new neuroscience partnership with Inspira Health. Earlier this year Virtua also announced its acquisition of Reconstructive Orthopedics.

Virtua acquired Our Lady of Lourdes four years ago in 2019, with David Kindlick, chair of the Virtua Board of Trustees saying at the time, “By investing in Lourdes, Virtua is demonstrating that it is fully committed to the people of this region and that, collectively, we are here for good.”

Virtua Health operates nearly 300 care locations and 100-plus buildings, with over 14,000 employees that include 2,850 clinicians. The organization runs five hospitals, seven emergency departments and urgent care centers, and is affiliated with Penn Medicine and Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia for cancer, neurosciences and pediatrics, respectively.
