Research underway for the latest edition of Invest: Pittsburgh

April 2025 — Long known for its industrial past and academic prowess, Pittsburgh continues to evolve into a diversified economy grounded in healthcare, higher education, technology, and manufacturing. As the city adapts to national and global shifts, local leaders are rethinking strategies to ensure resilience and inclusive growth.
Now in development, the third edition of Invest: Pittsburgh will feature exclusive interviews with over 200 influential voices across business, government, and education, along with caa’s signature economic sector-by-sector analysis.
“Pittsburgh has always been a city of reinvention. Today, its leadership is building on that legacy, to drive innovation and growth across key industries like manufacturing, healthcare, and education,” said Abby Lindenberg, founder and CEO of caa, “With Invest: Pittsburgh, we aim to highlight how local leaders are building a stronger, future-ready economy. ”
Despite ongoing macroeconomic uncertainties, recent surveys indicate steady optimism among businesses. PNC’s Spring 2025 survey found that 56% of small and mid-sized business owners are highly optimistic about the national economy — up from 34% a year prior — suggesting growing confidence in market conditions. Regionally, Pittsburgh-area companies continue to navigate rising costs and workforce needs while capitalizing on strengths in sectors like advanced manufacturing, clean energy, and life sciences.
The Pittsburgh metro area stabilized its population between 2023 and 2024, marking a shift after years of decline. According to new U.S. Census Bureau data, the region gained roughly 450 residents — growth driven almost entirely by international migration, as cited by Axios. With over 10,000 immigrants arriving last year, demographic trends now support a more resilient workforce and signal renewed appeal to global talent, reinforcing Pittsburgh’s long-term economic potential.
Invest: Pittsburgh will explore these themes and more through exclusive insights from key stakeholders and an in-depth analysis of the challenges and opportunities shaping Western Pennsylvania’s economic future.
