Spotlight On: Jordan Vexler, CEO, Monterrey Metal Recycling Solutions

June 2025 — Jordan Vexler, CEO of Monterrey Metal Recycling Solutions, spoke with Invest: about the company’s vital role in the region’s materials processing industry. “As a metal recycler, we have the most processing capacity in San Antonio and are the largest independent recycler in the region. Through our technology-driven demanufacturing processes, we convert obsolete metals into raw commodities that are sold directly to end consumers like steel mills, smelters, and foundries,” Vexler said.

Reflecting on the past year, what have been some significant milestones or achievements for Monterrey Metal Recycling Solutions (MMRS)?

We continue to modernize and make our processes more efficient. We are continuously adding, increasing capacity and capability to meet the recycling needs of an ever-growing business community to match the growth of San Antonio. We have grown our team substantially and have launched a transloading facility, Monterrey Metal Recycling Solutions, to support our growing logistics capabilities. As we process metal for recycling, the metal we sell goes directly to steel mills to make new steel products. We then receive this new production steel via railroad and unload it for regional distribution. We appreciate that this demonstrates the story of circularity and has been the most substantial point of growth for us this year.

What role does the recyclability of metal play in the manufacturing infrastructure in San Antonio?

At its basic level, metal recycling drives value for the recapture of obsolete metal and byproduct generated in the manufacturing process. We are a service to our customer base, which is comprised mostly of industry and trades. We understand that at manufacturing facilities, it is necessary for the recycling needs to be addressed promptly and according to their constraints so as to not interrupt their processes. We provide containers of various sizes to suit our manufacturers’ needs according to their plant setup and the amount of product they are sending into the recycling stream. We work on their time. If their containers are full and unable to store their metal by-products, it creates a bottleneck. Our relationship is integral to these manufacturers.

How is MMRS working to improve customer service for clients?

We are regularly adding to our fleet and incorporating new technologies to improve these fleet services. We also provide a level of transparency that our customers appreciate, providing digital reporting of their metal recycling, which also allows clients to recognize their recycling rates. We have added a designated customer service specialist who interfaces with customers and meets their needs to the best of our ability. We strive to provide the best customer service in San Antonio. As a metal recycler, we have the most processing capacity in San Antonio and are the largest independent recycler in the region. Through our demanufacturing processes, we convert obsolete metals into raw commodities that are sold directly to end consumers like steel mills, smelters, and foundries.

How is the company leveraging new forms of technology and innovation to provide the most efficient metal recycling services?

Visitors are regularly impressed by our facilities and learning about what metal recycling entails. Much of the equipment we use to sort metal has its origins in food manufacturing. Equipment used to find foreign metals in food has been adapted to recycling. We use many different kinds of magnets with different currents to separate, for example, steel and aluminum. We then use an induction sensor sorting system as well as density sorters and sizing equipment to identify the remaining metal, ensuring to we recapture as much recyclable material as possible. All of our equipment is run through programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and motor control centers, so we are able to monitor the performance of the equipment remotely, which greatly reduces downtime. Technology in our industry is constantly changing, and we are known to be early adaptors. The metal we process is rarely touched by hand; rather, computer-based systems segregate our material, resulting in a 98% recycling rate and minimizing the amount of metal that goes to the landfill.

To what extent does your proximity to the city of San Antonio contribute to attracting business opportunities and growth for MMRS?

Our proximity to San Antonio’s industrial core is critical to our growth and ability to serve major manufacturers efficiently. Our operations handle a substantial throughput of recycled metal each year—enough to fill San Antonio’s 750-foot-tall Tower of the Americas more than five times—demonstrating the industrial scale and regional importance of our work. Being located near key industrial hubs, the Port of San Antonio, and the Union Pacific Yard, allows us to transport materials quickly and sustainably, primarily via rail. This strategic location supports our commitment to green operations, responsive service, and minimizes impact on local roadways.

How does MMRS tie with the manufacturing, oil and gas, and trades industries?

At Monterrey Metal Recycling Solutions, we like to say we recycle everything from trains and planes to automobiles and utensils. We serve all sectors – from global manufacturers to local trades. San Antonio is home to some of the largest aircraft-related companies in the country, and we proudly support them alongside major oil and gas operations, vehicle manufacturers, and construction and demolition. We also work with small businesses, including machine shops, welders, mechanics, electricians, and roofers.

In addition to industrial and commercial partners, we collaborate with solid waste organizations — including the city of San Antonio — to support large-scale recycling initiatives and responsible material recovery.  We are also a proud Charter Member of ReWorks SA, a CoSA business recycling program.

Our goal and capabilities are simple: to make metal recycling valuable, efficient, accessible, and environmentally responsible for every industry we serve.
