Business insights, CEO, small businesses, leadership, Women’s History Month, Betty Friedan, opinionAs I continue to celebrate Women’s History Month, I would like to honor several trailblazing women who have defied the odds and shattered glass ceilings in the world of media. Three remarkable women who stand out as true inspirations are Shonda Rhimes, Oprah Winfrey, and Ellen DeGeneres. These women have not only achieved incredible success in their fields but have also paved the way for future generations of women through their resilience, talent, and determination.

Shonda Rhimes, the creative genius behind hit television shows like Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal, is a force to be reckoned with in the entertainment industry. Overcoming numerous challenges and barriers, Rhimes has become one of the most influential television producers of our time. Her ability to create compelling, diverse characters and captivating storylines has earned her numerous awards and accolades, making her a true trailblazer in television.

A woman and a woman of color, she has succeeded in a white male-dominated industry. As a female CEO, I have often felt left out of the “boys club” that I still see in the business world. Doors weren’t opened for me in the way I have seen it for men. I didn’t have many female CEOs that I knew personally and could look to when I was growing my career and taking on my role as a CEO and founder. I am certain Rhimes felt the same way, and it gave me strength that if other women could “figure it out,” I could, too.

Similarly, Oprah Winfrey’s journey from a troubled childhood to becoming one of the most powerful women in media is nothing short of extraordinary. As the founder of the iconic The Oprah Winfrey Show, Oprah revolutionized the talk show format and used her platform to tackle important issues such as race, gender, and social justice. Through her media empire, Oprah has inspired millions and shaped the cultural landscape.

Growing up, Oprah was always on in my house. This may sound strange, but I felt like she was my mom! Like the advice she was giving to her guests was actually for me. She has this way of reaching through the TV and grabbing you. She has been a pivotal figure in my Invest:Insights video platform. I will often ask myself: What would Oprah do?

And then, Ellen DeGeneres. Known for her comedic talent and infectious personality, Ellen has also made a significant impact in the media sector. As the host of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, she has spread kindness, positivity, and acceptance. Her journey to success, marked by challenges like coming out as gay at a time when it was still taboo, has always remained true to herself and her values, inspiring others to do the same.

I am a huge fan of comedy. I love stand-up, improv, heck even a good romcom will do. And someone like Ellen, who was revolutionary not only on screen (females can’t be comedians!) but off screen (openly gay women can’t make it in showbiz!) has been a constant reminder to me to be me, no matter what. My type of funny might not land, and not everyone might agree with how I live my life, but if I am true to myself and listen to my heart, I will always succeed.

What sets these women apart is not just their talent and success, but also their commitment to authenticity and inclusivity. They have used their platforms to amplify marginalized voices, challenge norms, and advocate for change. As a woman aspiring to make her own mark in media, I find them to be true inspirations. They have shown that with hard work, perseverance, and self-belief, anything is possible.

Shonda Rhimes, Oprah Winfrey, and Ellen DeGeneres are shining examples of self-made women who have defied the odds to achieve unparalleled success in media. Their stories remind us that no dream is too big and no obstacle is too great to overcome. As we celebrate their achievements during Women’s History Month, let us be inspired by their journeys and strive to create our own path to success.
